When Are Palm Trees Planted in the UAE?

The palm tree planting season in the UAE begins in early summer, reaching its peak between June 25 and July 10 each year. This period is locally known as “Al-Tabshirah.”

However, farmers in the Western Region, especially in Liwa, prefer planting palm trees after the rutab (fresh date) harvest season, which usually takes place in September.

How Palm Trees Are Propagated in the UAE

Palm trees can be propagated through seeds, offshoots (suckers), and plant tissue culture. Under ideal conditions, seeds may germinate within two to three weeks.

However, many farmers believe that propagation through offshoots is superior to seed propagation, as growing palms from seeds often results in variations in flowering quality and fruit characteristics compared to the parent tree.

Best Location for Growing Palm Trees in the UAE

Below are the environmental conditions required for palm trees to grow successfully:

  • Temperature: Date palms thrive in high summer temperatures and mild, frost-free winters. During flowering and fruit ripening stages, palm trees prefer low humidity, intense sunlight, and minimal rainfall.
  • Soil: Palm trees can grow in various soil types, but they perform best in deep, well-drained sandy loam soils with good aeration.
  • Soil pH: It is recommended to plant palm trees in soil with a pH ranging between 8 and 11, preferably free from calcium carbonate.

Tips for Growing Palm Trees in the UAE

Here are some important tips to consider when planting palm trees in the UAE:

  • Successful date palm cultivation requires knowledge of the specific date variety you plan to grow. While date palms can thrive with minimal care, understanding each variety’s needs helps improve fruit quality and prevent diseases.
  • Date palms require ample horizontal and vertical space to grow properly and remain healthy.
  • Palm trees can initially be grown in pots, but they should be transplanted into the ground after a few months.
  • The land must be well prepared before planting, including removing old trees, branches, and stones from the field.
  • It is recommended to dig planting holes measuring 60 × 60 × 60 cm, while maintaining a spacing of 6 × 6 meters between trees.
  • Fertilize the soil using organic manure, such as cow dung, compost, or dried sheep manure.
